How to compare pre-roll prices on a dispensary menu
How-toMassachusettsUpdated Sep 16, 2026
Compare pre-rolls on two numbers together: the price per pre-roll and the price per gram. A menu lists a multi-pack at its total weight, so weight alone puts a five-pack of half grams next to a single 2.5 gram pre-roll, and price alone hides how much flower each dollar buys. The Cannabis Control Commission publishes a statewide average price per gram across adult-use sales, $3.81 in August 2026, but does not break out pre-rolls, so there is no official pre-roll figure to compare against.
Why a pack's weight misleads
When the name does not say how many are in the box, price is the tell. A 2.5g item at the price of five singles is a pack of half grams. A 2g item priced like one pre-roll is a genuine single. Divide by the count before comparing a pack with a single, and compare price per gram only between items of the same kind.
Infused pre-rolls, rolled with concentrate or coated in kief, are a different product from a plain flower pre-roll of the same weight, so compare them only with each other.
What a key value item is
A key value item is a product shoppers remember the price of and use to judge a whole store. In most categories it is the cheapest common unit: a plain 1g pre-roll, an eighth of the house flower. Shoppers do not compare the price of every product on two menus; they compare the few they buy often, and conclude from those whether a store is expensive.
That makes the 1g single a poor place to take margin. A store that prices it above nearby menus reads as expensive even when the rest of its menu is not, and a store that prices it competitively can hold margin on the products shoppers do not benchmark.
