Categories: the catalog's and the storefront's

Dutchie has two ways of naming a category, and the Storefront screens use both. Knowing which is which explains most "I saved it but the website does not show it" questions.

The catalog's category

In the Dutchie back office every product belongs to a product category such as Flower, Edibles or Vaporizers. Dutchie identifies each one by a number (its Dutchie id), and often files it under a broader master category. BudLogix reads this list live from Dutchie, which is why the Categories panel on the Navigation Menu and the rows on Category mappings need a working Dutchie API key (see Connections).

The number is the stable thing: the name can be edited in Dutchie, the id stays. So the Navigation Menu stores each flyout against the Dutchie id, and a quiz answer's categoryId is a Dutchie id too.

The storefront's category

The website, on the other hand, addresses categories by a short word in the page address: flower, pre-rolls, edibles. Dutchie calls this the c-name; BudLogix calls it the storefront slug. It is a name, not a number, and it is decided by the theme, not by the back office. The two are not automatically the same: a Dutchie category "Pre-Rolls" might be pre-rolls, prerolls or joints on the website.

The mapping between them

Category mappings is the table that says "Dutchie id 123 is flower on the website". When the website asks for the menu, BudLogix translates every flyout from its Dutchie id to the mapped slug. A Dutchie category with no slug is skipped: the flyout stays saved in BudLogix, but the website never receives it. That is the first thing to check when a menu does not appear.

Custom roots on the Navigation Menu (Deals, Staff picks) are not Dutchie categories, so they need no mapping; their Storage slug is already a storefront-style name. A slug made only of digits is reserved, because that is what a Dutchie id looks like.

Where each one is used

  • Navigation Menu: flyouts are keyed by Dutchie category; link targets use a Dutchie category or a collection.
  • Category mappings: Dutchie id on the left, storefront slug on the right.
  • Hero carousel: a slide's in-store product list uses storefront names (Category c-name, Brand c-name, Collection c-name).
  • Product quiz: an answer's categoryId is a Dutchie id.
